Pool leak repair Marbella: from first suspicion to a sealed leak
A pool leak often shows up not in the water but on the water meter, especially when an automatic top-up replaces every lost litre straight away. Pool leak repair Marbella is therefore a matter of order: first establish whether there is a leak, then where it is, and only then repair it. This article takes you through those steps.
In short:
- Summer evaporation on the Costa del Sol is often 4 to 8 mm a day, more in heat and wind.
- A 24-hour bucket test shows whether your pool loses more than evaporation explains.
- The height at which the level stops often points to the leak.
- A leak at a skimmer, light, return jet or grout joint can usually be sealed with the water still in the pool.
- Never empty an in-ground pool on your own: water in the surrounding soil can push up or crack the empty shell.
Signs your pool is losing water
Watch for these clues, especially outside the high season:
- You are still topping up several times a week in October or November.
- The water meter keeps turning while nothing is in use in the house or garden.
- Wet patches appear in the lawn, or terrace tiles start to sink.
- In the plant room you see drips or a white limescale or salt crust around couplings.
- On a sloping plot, water surfaces on the plot below.
If consumption rises, look beyond the pool as well: a leaking irrigation pipe or a sticking float gives the same picture.
The 24-hour bucket test
You need a bucket, a waterproof marker and a roll of tape.
- Switch off the automatic top-up.
- Stand the bucket on the second or third pool step and fill it with pool water to the pool's level.
- Mark the level inside the bucket with the marker, and the pool level with tape on the skimmer.
- Leave the pump on its usual timer and keep everyone out of the water for a full day.
- After 24 hours, compare the drop in bucket and pool.
If the pool drops clearly faster, a leak is likely. A second round with the pump off then tells you more about the location. Allow some margin: rain, splashing or an overflow channel skew the result.
Where the leak is: read the level
Switch the pump off, do not top up and watch where the water comes to rest.
- Just below the skimmer opening: the seam between skimmer and wall.
- Level with the light: the gasket or cable gland of the light niche.
- Below all openings: a pipe under the ground or terrace, or a crack in the shell.
- More loss with the pump on: the pressure side, meaning the return jets and return line.
- High use without a falling level: on an overflow pool, the balance tank or float.
If the water is below the skimmer, do not start the pump. Sucking in air or running dry damages the pump. Top up first.
A dye test in still water confirms a suspect seam. For underground pipes, a leak detection specialist uses a pressure test per line, acoustic equipment and sometimes a camera, so digging happens in one spot.
Pool leak repair Marbella: matching the repair to the leak
- Skimmer or fitting: sealing with underwater-curing epoxy, or replacing the gasket or skimmer.
- Light niche: a new gasket or cable gland; an old halogen light often becomes an LED unit. The power goes off first, and the work is done by a qualified person.
- Grout and mosaic: regrouting with pool-grade grout, re-bonding loose tiles.
- Crack in the shell: opening it up and filling it with structural repair mortar or epoxy. If the crack is getting longer or wider, have it assessed structurally for subsidence before anything else.
- Pipe: exposing it at one spot, replacing the section, pressure-testing and only then closing up.
A concrete example of what a hidden leak costs: 1 cm a day on a 10 by 4 metre pool is 400 litres a day. Double that loss on a pool with 50 m² of surface and you are at a cubic metre a day.
What we do
Faro Costa handles each pool repair job in set steps:
- On-site check. We inspect the pool, the visible fittings and the plant room, which in Marbella is often under a terrace or in a basement.
- Testing. A bucket test and level readings with and without the pump, plus a dye test where needed.
- Repair. Skimmers, lights, fittings, grout, pumps, filters and valves are work we do in-house. Tracing leaks in buried pipes is a job for a qualified specialist partner where needed.
- Follow-up check. A new bucket test confirms the result. Sometimes there is more than one leak, and this shows it straight away.
- Report. You receive photos of the work, even when you are not in Spain.

Frequently asked questions
Does my pool need draining for the repair?
Usually not. Skimmers, lights and fittings can often be sealed underwater. Larger grout repairs mean lowering the level partly. Whether a full drain is safe is for a professional to judge, because of groundwater pressure.
How much water loss is normal?
A summer pool here typically gives up 4 to 8 mm a day to the air, and more when it is hot and windy. It varies by pool, which is why the bucket test is more reliable than a fixed figure.
Why does my pool look fine while the bill goes up?
An automatic top-up keeps the level steady and so hides the leak. Switch it off and do the bucket test.
Does my insurance cover leak detection?
That depends on your policy. A number of Spanish home insurance policies cover tracing a leak or the resulting damage; ask your insurer before any work starts.
How do I know the leak is really gone?
After the repair, a new bucket test follows. When the pool and the bucket fall at the same rate again, the leak has been dealt with.
